5 minutes to celebrate

This morning at 8:10am I turned in my thesis, "An Assessment of the Treatment of Ecology in Recent Old Testament Theologies". Several of you may be thinking, "didn't he already turn that in?". This submission was not to my supervisor (as the past ones have been), but was instead to the degree office. They will have it evaluated and give me a grade soon. Then I will have several copies published for use in the library at Southwestern Seminary, and Baylor University. This is not a publishing contract or a widely distributed sort of thing. Perhaps I can get part of it published in a journal, we'll see.

In other news, I recently began the process of switching operating systems. I will be moving to Ubuntu, a Linux distribution, from Windows Vista. Windows is fine, but it takes a while to load up, etc. I also like the idea of freely distributed software, with helpful support. Microsoft hasn't been that supportive or helpful to me. In addition, it seems to me that if an operating system is free, the price of the overall computer could be lower, thus enabling more people to access to the information superhighway.

  1. Matthew Said,

I have a computer science degree, did all my programming in Linux and still became infinitely frustrated with its limitations. Just because there is a free couch sitting next to a dumpster in your apt. complex doesn't mean you bring it home and sit on it.

I think its reasonable for an internet pc. (browsing and e-mail) But if you start editing video, pics, etc. you will inevitably run into problems.

Good luck with the experiment though, I hope you are creating a separate partition to run Linux on until you come back to Windows. Should make the transition easier.

  2. Unknown Said,

that's just it, my laptop doesn't do much except word processing and internet. So, the 2nd partition (you were right) with linux on it will get plenty of use.

  3. Anonymous Said,

Congratulations on turning in your thesis. I want to read it some time.

Don't let the naysayers discourage you. Linux (and especially Ubuntu) has come a long way in the last couple of years. Having to maintain nearly 100 Ubuntu machines at work has not discouraged me from using it. I've even considered switching from my Mac!

  4. Justin Said,

Wow, if you've considered leaving the mighty Mac, then it must be special...:)
